The Hours Nobody Sees
Writing the book didn't match the peaceful, coffee-sipping image most people picture. It required fitting the writing into everyday life—often late at night or during stolen moments—alongside the emotional work of sitting with memories to truly understand their meaning.
Then Came the Editing...
Editing a memoir taught a vital lesson about honoring the truth of real-life experiences over decorative phrasing. It took repeated passes and a meticulous focus on small details to ensure the sequence and core memories remained entirely honest.
WHEN SELF-DOUBT SHOWED UP
There were moments when I questioned whether my story was worth telling and whether I could really call myself an author. I learned that confidence does not always come before we begin — sometimes we begin while still doubting ourselves, and confidence meets us along the way.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

The story behind the woman who wrote The Hidden Assignment — and the unexpected journey of becoming an author.
Portia Keleketu is a South African author and entrepreneur whose writing is rooted in lived experience, reflection and the lessons found in life's unexpected turns. In The Hidden Assignment, she shares a deeply personal journey of love, loss, resilience, unanswered questions and the meaning that can emerge when we look back at the experiences that shaped us.
I Didn't Set Out to Become an Author
If you had asked me years ago whether I would one day write a book about some of the most personal experiences of my life, my answer would probably have been no. Yet somehow, years later, I found myself doing exactly that. And becoming an author didn't happen in one dramatic moment. It happened quietly — one memory, one paragraph, one chapter and, very often, one very late night at a time.
Becoming “Author Portia”
Beyond writing lies the logistical reality of publishing—handling formatting, page numbers, covers, ISBNs, and endless rounds of proofreading. Navigating these technical details is what finally transformed a collection of digital documents and memories into a real book.
What Writing Gave Me
The most valuable takeaway wasn't the title of author, but the profound perspective gained by reconnecting with earlier versions of myself—from a young woman facing uncertainty to an entrepreneur navigating entirely different challenges—ultimately bringing a deeper understanding to the entire journey.
Write To Me

BEHIND THE AUTHOR IS A LIFE STILL BEING LIVED.

Writing The Hidden Assignment introduced me to the author within me, but it did not replace the other parts of who I am. I am still a mother, an entrepreneur, a woman with dreams still unfolding — and now, an author finding her voice.
